Disability Statement

The College Merthyr Tydfil is committed to providing an environment that promotes equality and inclusion for all students capable of succeeding on their chosen course. We welcome students with additional learning needs and endeavour to make every effort to identify and remove barriers to their learning. We refuse to tolerate discriminatory behaviour based on disability and aim to create equal opportunities for all students enabling them to achieve their very best.

Universal Learning Support

Our universal learning provision (high quality support for all) is designed to meet the needs of most learners through an inclusive learning environment. We use a person-centred planning approach to identify individual need and help develop a One Page Profile. This One Page Profile can be available for those that teach you and support you so that they know what works for you and how best to meet your needs.

Learning Support Workers (LSWs)

LSWs are available to support with course work such as breaking down assignments, searching for information and meeting deadlines. LSWs can help with use of assistive technology and work as part of a whole setting approach to maximise the potential of all learners. We also have specialist support staff including a Specific Learning Difficulties Officer and Sensory Loss Officer.

Support for Autistic learners

We have qualified members of staff who can work with you to develop strategies, for example managing routines, workload, with managing sensory processing and improving confidence. These members of staff can also work with your tutors to support you.

Assistive and adaptive technology

Assistive technology can support you with accessing learning and performing activities, promoting your independence in and out of college. We have a range of assistive technology that can support you at college including apps, specialist equipment, overlays, laptops. You can meet with our team to have a demonstration and find out what works for you.

Hearing and Visual Loss

A range of personalised support is available to make reasonable adjustments if you have visual or hearing difficulties. This may include assistance from an allocated Learning Support Worker, adapted learning resources, adaptations to the learning environment or support with using assistive technology that is recommended for you. We can also arrange mobility and orientation support at college.

Exam Access Arrangements

You may be able to get extra support during exams – tell your Tutor if you’ve been given exam access arrangements before (arrangements awarded at school aren’t automatically given at college).

Access arrangements might be extra time, a separate room, access to a reader, a prompter, a scribe, use of a computer, or a combination of these or other recommendations.
