Our commitment to Equality at The College Merthyr Tydfil

‘The College Merthyr Tydfil is actively committed to creating a learning and working environment that promotes equality, is inclusive and celebrates diversity. We strive towards creating a sense of belonging for our learners, staff and stakeholders in which everyone feels safe and respected. We will collaborate with partners to create an environment in which everyone is treated fairly and with integrity, regardless of age, disability, gender identity, marital status, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation. Our commitment is underpinned by the Equality Act 2010 in which we will be supportive and ensure all voices are heard and represented.’

Our Strategic Equality Plan, objectives and commitments have been developed within the context of the University of South Wales Group’s 2030 strategy.

The Plan considers all protected characteristics; age, disability, gender identity, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex and sexual orientation and has been developed within the context of our duties under the Equality Act 2010. In recognising our commitment to equality, we are guided by legislation, the wider Group 2030 strategy, Colegau Cymru and Welsh Government to ensure there is parity with learner, staff and stakeholder experiences through an intersectional lens.

The Plan will:

  • meet the needs and rights of staff, students and stakeholders from protected groups;
  • address any disadvantage experienced by students, staff and visitors due to their protected characteristics;
  • challenge barriers to participation in all aspects of College life for students, staff and stakeholders from protected characteristic groups;
  • foster inclusivity and respect to ensure the College community enables people to work collaboratively and diversity is celebrated.

Welsh Language

We acknowledge that being a Welsh speaker is not a protected characteristic under the Equality Act and compliance with the Welsh Language Standards is administered separately. However, The College Merthyr Tydfil recognises the importance and value of our commitment to Welsh language and ensuring the equal treatment of Welsh language speakers in our community. We abide by the Welsh Language Standards and are committed to Cymraeg 2050: A million Welsh speakers.

Equality Impact Assessments (EIA)

The college has a duty to assess the potential impact of its activities on people with protected characteristics as outlined in the Equality Act 2010.

A template is available to assist each department with a thorough Equality Impact Assessment (EIA). It is an expectation that at policy development stage all new policies and procedures are assessed before approval and that this assessment will be documented. All staff involved in developing and writing college policies should undergo training on the Equality Impact Assessment process.
