SETUP
Working in partnership with Active Merthyr Tydfil, the programme provides a unique and effective coach education and training programme. Learners can achieve their academic aspirations, helping them to progress successfully into employment, an apprenticeship or higher-level study in the field of Sport and Active Leisure.
The programme, which is the first of its kind in the local region, provides a brand new ‘employability’ strand to the college’s existing BTEC Level 3 Sports Coaching course. It provides our learners with the added value and support they require to help them stand out from the crowd and secure future employment or university places.
Our three key strands:
The programme places an emphasis on learner’s awareness and understanding of the sports industry and sector through lectures, guest talks, visits, placements and workshops.
Our learners will have the opportunity to undertake high quality community-based placements through Active Merthyr Tydfil’s network of providers, giving them the chance to put into practice, the theory, knowledge, and skills they are gaining in the classroom, whilst at the same time broadening their understanding of the careers available in this sector.
SETUP learners will be working with a variety of organisations which will allow them to not only gain qualifications and experience, but to help shape their futures. These include Active Merthyr, local primary and secondary schools, community sport groups, local gyms and National Governing Bodies.
Learners will also have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications to complement and add to their BTEC level 3 qualification, including Sports Leaders, First Aid, Safeguarding, Disability Inclusion Training, Physical Literacy, FAW Leaders, WRU Tag Leaders and many more.
Erin McNulty Case Study
Former Bishop Hedley High School pupil Erin received outstanding vocational results, achieving a Distinction in her BTEC L3 National Foundation Diploma Sports Coaching and Development course. “What I enjoy most about my course is the opportunities it has provided me for future employment. I have completed a variety of extra qualifications such as First Aid and different Sport Coaching Awards. I would say the new SETUP program that is involved with my course at the college has helped me gain a lot of self-confidence, as well as placements and experience.
