The Level 3 Year 1 Childcare Group at The College Merthyr Tydfil Collaborates with Carpentry Students to Revamp Outdoor Area.

The Level 3 Year 1 Childcare Group at The College Merthyr Tydfil has recently taken an innovative approach to promote outdoor learning and sustainability by working with Carpentry staff and learners to redesign the outdoor area. The collaborative effort aims to support the holistic development of children through hands-on experiences with natural materials.

Based on the new Curriculum within Wales, which emphasises the importance of the outdoors and sustainable practices, the childcare students conceptualised and designed a mud kitchen using fully recyclable materials. The creation process involved active participation from Carpentry learners, who lent their expertise and resources to assist in the construction of the mud kitchen.

In addition to the mud kitchen, the childcare group has also repurposed various discarded materials to create different areas within the outdoor space. The children from Here We Grow nursery will have the opportunity to work alongside the childcare learners to construct planters using old tires that have been collected. This collaborative activity not only encourages creativity but also instils a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Furthermore, the revamped outdoor area will be maintained and further developed by both the childcare learners and nursery. This ongoing collaboration underscores the commitment of The College Merthyr Tydfil to provide engaging and sustainable learning environments that contribute to the growth and well-being of children.
