College first to deliver Nursing cadet scheme

The College Merthyr Tydfil has joined in partnership with The Royal College of Nursing to be the first college of further education to offer the RCN Prince of Wales Nursing Cadet scheme to college learners wishing to pursue a career in nursing or other professions in the NHS.

The scheme, aims to inspire young people, particularly those from disadvantages backgrounds, to work in health and care by giving them access to opportunities for academic study and hands-on experience in the nursing and health sector.

Combining 105 hours of guided and experiential learning with 20 hours of clinical observational placements, the scheme will allow learners studying on our Health and Care and Access courses, the opportunity to engage with industry professionals and experience first-hand what it would be like to be working in this profession.

Commenting on the partnership, Helen Hare, Project Manager, said “I am delighted to be working with the College Merthyr Tydfil to deliver this scheme in an education setting. This is a first for us as we have previously worked with uniform and youth organisations. I have been blown over by the enthusiasm of the learners at the college who want to take part and engage.

There is a shortage of young people going into the care sector and professions across Wales and we really hope that this scheme will help to address this.”

Helen and RCN colleagues met with a number of the learners who will be joining the scheme at the beginning of October. Imogen, who is currently studying on the college’s level 3 Health and Social Care course, commented, “I’m really happy to have the opportunity to join this scheme. I would like to go into a career in Mental Health Nursing so the experience and knowledge that I can gain from taking part will hopefully help me stand out in my university application.”

The scheme, which is backed by HRH the Prince of Wales, will begin in October 2022 with learners undertaking the educational modules between October to February and then undertaking their placements from February onwards.

Cadets who complete the scheme will then become ambassadors for the programme going forward.

Rebecca Thomas, Head of Health and Social Care at the college, said, “Nursing requires dedication and a strong sense of public service, but it offers huge opportunities for people to make a real difference. We’re delighted to give our learners the opportunity to get a taste of what the profession is about and also what it can give them in return.”
