Graduation Success for College Merthyr Tydfil Scholars

Learners enrolled on The Scholars Programme at The College Merthyr Tydfil were celebrating their success today at their Graduation Event. The group of 10 AS (year 12) learners have studied with their PhD tutor Merion Evans across the last few months to complete, what is, a very academic challenging programme designed to emulate the learning experience at highly-selective universities.

The Scholars Programme, which is run by the award-winning charity, the Brilliant Club, is designed to help learners develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to progress to elite universities. Using highly trained PhD tutors, the programme offers the opportunity for learners to engage in new and challenging topics beyond their current A level curriculum, whilst experiencing university-style learning in small group tutorials. Based around the topic of ‘what is the universe made of?’ the 10 learners have had the opportunity to research a range of phenomenon, explore research methods and gain valuable learning techniques and skills to support their progression into higher education.

Speaking about her experience at the Graduation event, scholar Uriel Riviera, commented, “It was a privilege to participate in a valuable experience; I'm confident all of us have been able to take something from this course, whether it is an insight to university work, vital essay skills or a greater understanding of what the universe is made of.

Uriel, who is a past pupil at Bishop Hedley Catholic High School, is currently studying Engineering, Physics, Maths and Further Maths and is aspiring to become an aeronautical engineer. She said, “Being part of the Scholars programme has helped to further develop my skills and experience and will hopefully help me stand out from the crowd in my application to study aeronautical engineering at Cambridge University.”

Commenting on the success of the learners, Chris Ford, Director of Learning at the college stated, “The college has a unique and exciting programme in place for supporting our high achieving learners and the Scholars programme helps to underpin this, providing further enrichment and opportunities to help broaden their learning beyond the confines of the traditional A-Level curriculum. We are so proud of all of our graduates and what they have achieved. Through engaging in the programme, they are now much more prepared with the skills and knowledge to pursue a pathway at the top universities, including the Russell Group and Oxbridge Universities.
