The College Merthyr Tydfil launches brand new Sports, Employment, Training and Upskilling Programme (SETUP)

The College Merthyr Tydfil is excited to launch a brand new Sports, Employment, Training and Upskilling Programme (SETUP) this September.

Working in partnership with Active Merthyr Tydfil, the programme will provide a unique and effective coaching education and training programme where learners can achieve their academic aspirations alongside gaining invaluable industry placements and awareness, helping them to progress successfully into employment or higher level study in sports coaching.

The programme, which is the first of its kind in the local region, will provide a brand new ‘employability’ strand to the college’s existing BTEC Level 3 Sports Coaching course, enabling learners to gain invaluable industry and sector specific knowledge, skills and experience and providing them with the added value they need to help them stand out from the crowd and secure future employment or university places.

Based around three key strands, the programme will focus on develop learners’ understanding of the sports industry and sector through lectures, guest talks, visits and placements.

However, the real selling point of this new programme will be the opportunity for learners to undertake high quality community based placements through Active Merthyr Tydfil’s network of providers, giving them the chance to put into practice, the theory, knowledge and skills they are gaining in the classroom whilst at the same time broadening their understanding of the careers available in this sector.

Learners will also have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications to complement and add to their BTEC level 3, including Sports Leaders, First Aid, safeguarding, Disability Inclusion training and Physical Literacy.

Sarah Kerrigan, Head of Sports and Public Services at the college, said “We’re so pleased to have the support of Active Merthyr Tydfil to be able to deliver this unique programme. The sports industry knowledge and employer links that they will bring to the programme will ensure that all learners have the best experience possible and gain the employment skills and experience they need to help them progress successfully into future coaching and sports job roles. I am very much looking forward to seeing our first learners join the programme in September.”

Dan Bufton, Sport Development Manager at Active Merthyr Tydfil, commented “Active Merthyr Tydfil is delighted to be supporting The College Merthyr Tydfil’s new SETUP initiative and we are very much looking forward to seeing learners come through and participate in the programme.

During the coronavirus crisis, there has been a growing emphasis on the importance of participation in sport and exercise and the positive benefits this can have on mental health and well-being. As the industry starts to return to some form of normality, this is likely to lead to a growth in job opportunities across the sector. This programme will provide the perfect opportunity to equip our learners with the skills and experience they need to take advantage of these opportunities and progress successfully into coaching or sports based careers.”
