Course Outline

The A Level Sociology course is one of the top performing courses in the college for both AS and A2 results and student attendance. The majority of students are highly engaged with the subject, demonstrated by a significant number of students attending the extracurricular ‘Sociology Club’, which explores theory beyond the context of the curriculum.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grades A* to C including a Grade B or above in English Language or English Literature. You do not need to have taken sociology at GCSE.

What will I learn?

Throughout the programme, students study interrelationship between society and the individual; exploring how we acquire culture and the influence of social structures on every aspect of our lives. The course explores family, education, crime and deviance, inequality and social research methods. Students are encouraged to think beyond the curriculum, and engage in applying theory beyond the confines on the WJEC syllabus, to develop a genuine depth of knowledge of sociological enquiry in preparation for undergraduate study.

Course Assessment

AS Unit 1: Acquiring Culture and Sociology of Families Unit 2: Social Research Methods and Sociology of Education
