The Core Domestic Gas Safety Assessment (CCN1) is a foundational qualification for gas engineers in the UK. It’s a mandatory certification for anyone working on domestic gas appliances and systems, and it must be renewed every five years.
Category 1 – Experienced Gas Operatives Already hold or have previously held ACS certification (e.g. CCN1). May be applying for reassessment (required every 5 years). If the certificate expired more than 12 months ago, they must take the initial assessment again1. Category 2 – New Entrants with Related Skills Have transferable skills (e.g. qualified plumbers or heating engineers). Must complete a Managed Learning Programme (MLP) or equivalent gas training. Must compile a portfolio of supervised on-site gas work with a registered Gas Safe engineer2. Category 3 – New Entrants with No Prior Experience No relevant qualifications or experience. Must complete a full Managed Learning Programme (MLP), such as the Gas Foundation Course certified by BPEC. This includes both classroom training and supervised practical experience3.
