At Merthyr College, learners who previously achieved grades D and E in GCSE English Language get the opportunity to complete a 1 year resit course with the aim of improving their GCSE English grade to a C+. Resit lessons are taught by our dedicated GCSE English resit team and delivered through one two-hour lesson each week. Mature learners wishing to complete their GCSE in English, or upskill to grade B+, are also very welcome; for these learners we run evening classes up to two nights a week. As with all learning, good attendance is the key to success and exam confidence, and we expect our learners to maintain good attendance to their lessons for the duration of the year.

During these resit lessons, learners will revise the components of each units, along with key skills, question types and writing tasks for specific purposes and audiences. Resitting learners should expect to revisit and revise all types of extended writing during each lesson, along with practising low-tariff and high-tariff questions.
In 2022-23, resitting GCSE English learners will complete up to five core assessments in the lead-up to their summer resit examinations. These will include Unit 2 and 3 papers, both Unit 1 (Oracy) tasks and a mock examination. Their final examination, in addition to the Unit 1 tasks assessed by the GCSE team throughout the year, will be two two-hour exams: Unit 2 and Unit 3.
Learners will find that all potential careers, apprenticeships and Level 3/A Level courses require Grade C+ in GCSE English Language. Certain careers, such as teaching for example, require grade B+ in GCSE English.
