The Foundation Degree in Game Art and Design provides an in-depth exploration of the creative and technical skills required to develop game concepts, design mechanics, and create high-quality game assets. This course combines hands-on practical experience with theoretical study, preparing learners for a career in the gaming industry. Throughout the programme, learners will engage in modules that develop their artistic abilities, technical proficiency, and critical thinking. From fundamental game design principles and drawing techniques to the use of industry-standard game engines and real-time development tools, learners will gain the skills necessary to produce their own interactive game worlds. Working individually and in teams, learners will follow an iterative design process, refining their work through playtesting, critique, and analysis. The course places a strong emphasis on collaboration, problem-solving, and professional development, ensuring learners are ready to progress into employment or further study in the games industry.
The programme requires that learners have qualifications adding to a minimum of 48 UCAS points, such as a UAL Level 3 Creative Media Production and Technology, BTEC Extended Diploma in IT or any other equivalent qualifications in a relevant subject area. Mature students are welcome on the course, we take into account accreditation of prior learning, work-based learning and candidates career aspirations.
Throughout the Foundation Degree in Game Art and Design, you will develop a strong foundation in both the creative and technical aspects of game development. The course will introduce you to key game design principles, helping you understand how to conceptualise, plan, and develop engaging game mechanics, levels, and interactive experiences. You will also explore the artistic side of game development, honing your visual communication skills through traditional and digital drawing techniques. This includes learning about composition, proportion, colour theory, and visual storytelling to bring your game ideas to life. Technical development is a key focus of the course, and you will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard game engines, content creation tools, and scripting. This will allow you to experiment with real-time game assets and level design, bridging the gap between creativity and technical execution. Alongside this, you will learn the importance of teamwork and project management by working collaboratively on game projects, managing tasks, deadlines, and responsibilities within a development team. The course also encourages critical thinking and research, helping you to explore the history of games, art, and media. You will learn how to analyse and evaluate game design through academic study, developing a deeper understanding of the industry's cultural, ethical, and historical influences. Finally, through prototyping and playtesting, you will refine game concepts using an iterative design process, testing and improving your work based on player feedback. By the end of the course, you will have built a portfolio showcasing your skills in game design, art, and development, preparing you for further study or entry into the games industry.
Assessment is entirely coursework-based, with a strong focus on practical projects that mirror industry workflows. You will be evaluated through portfolio submissions, group and individual projects, presentations, and written reflections, ensuring a balance of technical skill development and critical analysis.
Graduates of this course will be well-prepared for careers in the games industry, with opportunities in game art, design, and development. Possible roles include, but are not limited to, concept artist, 3D modeller, level designer, or technical artist. The skills gained are also transferable to related industries such as animation, visual effects, and interactive media. Alternatively, learners can also progress to further study on full degree programs.
