Course Outline

The WJEC GCE in Built Environment offers a learning experience which focusses on applying knowledge, skills and understanding through contextualised tasks and study. It provides an excellent overview of the built environment and the associated professions. Skills associated with planning, developing, managing and evaluating built environment projects designing and drawing skills associated with built environment concepts Building Information Modelling (BIM) skills Surveying skills.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE's grade A*-C, applicants must have a C grade or above in GCSE Maths and English along with preferable combinations of Science/ Engineering / Digital Technology /Construction.

What will I learn?

Unit 3: Materials, Technologies and Techniques In this unit, learners will develop a comprehensive understanding of materials, technologies, and techniques used in the built environment. This includes studying the properties and degradation of materials, structural analysis and building comfort, standards for measurements, thermal, acoustic, and lighting considerations, as well as building services systems. Learners will also be required to apply relevant mathematical techniques within the context of Unit 3. Unit 4 focuses on surveying, development concepts, management of construction, purchasing and finance, and programmes of activities. Learners will have the option to choose between two pathways: building surveying of commercial or residential properties, or surveying land. Regardless of the chosen pathway, all learners will cover areas such as surveying (buildings or land), development concepts, management of construction, purchasing and finance, and programmes of activities. Learners will be required to present their work for Unit 4 Non-exam assessment in an appropriate manner.

Course Assessment

Unit 3: Materials, Technologies and Techniques (Written examination: 2 hours 30 minutes, 30% of A level qualification) Unit 4: Construction Practices (Non-exam assessment: approximately 40 hours, 30% of A level qualification)

Career Progression

By studying for the GCE AS/A Level Built Environment you will be able to gain essential employability skills that are valued by employers and higher education. One purpose of this qualification is to support access to higher education degree courses, such as: Architecture, Construction Management, Project Management, Estate Management, Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying, Engineering Services, Supply Chain Management and Design Management. Alternatively, the qualification, along with other appropriate qualifications, will help you to gain the required understanding and skills to apply for employment within the construction industry
