RADA success for former college student
Iwan Davies, a former Foundation Degree student at The College Merthyr Tydfil has successfully been accepted to study at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Iwan began his Foundation Degree in Performing Arts at the college after gaining his A-Levels at Ysgol Rhydywaun.
During his time on the course Iwan engaged in a number of challenging rehearsal processes, exploring a range of theatre styles and practitioners spanning Realism, Physical Theatre and Musical Theatre.
Iwan was an excellent student and achieved exceptional grades on a number of the modules he undertook. With close tutor support outside of the timetable, Iwan was able to develop his audition pieces and gain confidence in the audition process, aided also by his attendance at The Young Actor’s Studio in Cardiff.
Iwan’s stage experience was being constantly enhanced by roles in Life is a Cabaret, A Smell for Autumn, American Idiot and a number of devised workshop performances. An intelligent young man, Iwan was a positive influence on his peers and had a proactive approach to creating work and expanding his learning.
Towards the final weeks of the academic year Iwan had been offered places at three prestigious drama schools in London and had to make a very difficult decision but, guided by his tutors, finally accepted his place at RADA.
Iwan commented "The FD course gave me the year to concentrate on pure acting. It helped me in so many different ways, even outside of acting. The skills I learnt on the course helped me get a place at RADA and continue to inform what I do whilst living and studying in London. The course teaches you how to be yourself which enables you to become a better performer."
Chris Ford, Head of Creative Industries at the college, commented "We are very proud of Iwan and wish him the very best with his studies. He will be welcome back at any time and I’m sure he will be willing to share his experiences with our learners. I am glad we were able to contribute to his development as an actor and performer and have no doubt that he will succeed in his pursuits. We in the Performing Arts department feel privileged that Iwan will be representing not only the school, college and department at RADA but, perhaps more importantly, the town."
