Positive about Disabled People

The Scheme recognises the commitment the College has made to the employment of disabled people and the promotion of disability equality. The Scheme’s five commitments are:

1. To interview all disabled applicants who meet the advertised essential criteria for any advertised post and consider them on their abilities
2. To ensure that disabled employees can develop and use their abilities
3. To make every possible effort to see that disabled people stay in employment
4. To take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness
5. To review the commitments annually and to plan ways to improve

If a Guaranteed Interview Scheme applicant is offered the post the appropriate HR Officer will liase with the line manager to ensure any necessary, reasonable adjustments are in place prior to the individual starting the job.

The College can take Positive Action to increase representation in the workforce of current under represented groups e.g. disabled people. Often, Positive Action will counteract the effects of past discrimination. The College currently has very few disabled employees. It may be that employees are reluctant to disclose a disability, in which case the implementation of this Scheme would help to alleviate concerns about disclosure by reassuring employees that information they disclose will remain confidential and that the University has a strong commitment to diversity. Or, it may be that disabled people have been discriminated against in the past, albeit inadvertently.
