Duration:2 year part-time course, 6 hours per week plus 80 hours of teaching practice in Year One and 120 hours of teaching practice in Year Two.

Entry Requirements: PGCE: Any graduate or
postgraduate qualification. PCE: A Level 4 qualification e.g. HND or HNC. An NVQ Level 3 is also accepted if that is the highest
qualification in your area of work (e.g. plumbing, hairdressing,
bricklaying, beauty therapy, etc.)

If you don’t have the relevant
qualifications but are already working as a teacher or tutor, you will still be considered for a place on the course. All students applying for this course will be interviewed before a place on the course is offered by the college.

Course Description:
This practical course will give you the full qualification in
teaching in the Post-compulsory Education and Training sector.

You may already be working as a tutor or trainer and want to
get a formal qualification, or perhaps you’re passionate about
what you do for a living and want to teach others to do the same.
Whatever your subject and motivation, you’ll learn about the
whole process of preparing, delivering and evaluating lessons,
from writing a lesson plan to methods of assessment.

Flexible
As you’ll only have lectures for six hours each week, study
is easy to fit around your other commitments. There are two
sessions of lectures each week, so if you can’t make an
afternoon session, you can go an evening one and vice versa.
What’s more, you can do your teaching practice at a time that
suits you.

Versatile
Whatever subject you want to teach, you can learn how to teach
it here at Merthyr. Our classes are lively, with a real mixture of
people from all walks of life, from plumbers to psychologists,
artists to biologists.

Practical
As well as coming along to college, you’ll devote a lot of your
time to getting practical experience of teaching your chosen
subject. You’ll complete 80 hours of teaching practice in
Year One, and 120 hours in Year Two. So as well as getting a
qualification, you’ll also have lots of solid teaching
experience for your CV.

Relevant
All tutors on the course also teach their own specialist subject
area on other courses in the college, covering everything from
biology to computing, so you’ll be learning from staff who are
fully up-to-date with the latest teaching practices. We also
encourage guest lecturers to teach on the course, so you’ll get
talks and workshops from experts in specialist areas of teaching
and learning, such as learning disabilities or finance.

About the course
Whether you’re studying for the PGCE or the PCE, you’ll follow
exactly the same modules over the two years of the course.
In the first year, you’ll study two theory modules that will teach
you techniques to plan, deliver, assess and evaluate. You’ll then
put what you learn into practice with two practical modules.
In Year Two, you will study three core modules where you’ll look
more closely at aspects of managing, delivering and assessing
teaching and learning. You will also choose a module that
interests you from a range of options. You will also continue
your teaching practice with a practical module.

What you will Study:
There are no exams on this course. Instead, you’ll complete
a mixture of written assignments, presentations and teaching
practice assessments. For students who want to study a shorter course in teaching, you can work towards the Faculty Introduction to Teaching Certificate (FITC). Over four months, you’ll study the first two modules from the list below.

• Professional Practice II (Teaching Practice)
• Introduction to Basic Skills Support
Plus one module from the following options:
• Adult and Community Education
• Practical Bilingualism in Teaching
• Developing Competency-based Provision
• Mentoring in the Workplace

On Completion/ Career Paths:
As this is a vocational course, the majority of our students use their qualification to find employment as a tutor or teacher in their chosen subject area.
