The Learning Coach Team is located in the Flexible Learning Unit on the ground floor. It houses 28 computers and a range of learning resources to make study easier. We aim to provide as many ‘flexible’ study support opportunities as possible, including one-to-one, on-course, team-teaching – whatever you need! All our staff are qualified and teach in a range of faculty areas. Our ESF Administrator and Learning Coach, Rebecca Morgan and our Learning Coach Administrator, Louise Lake are happy to provide a friendly face, a supportive role or any information you may need.
In addition to the above-mentioned services, we can offer ‘Preparation for College’ sessions that allow you to build up skills in readiness for your vocational course. If you study a full time course, provision is made for 3 hours key skills tuition per week demonstrating the value of effective communication, application of number and ICT skills. Staff at the Flexible Learning Unit are available to help you with portfolio building for your key skills – just book an appointment! As your course progresses and the assignments start rolling in, you may need a helping hand with planning study, proof reading, using the internet or accessing other computer resources – the F.L.U. is there for you!
Our opening times are 9.30am – 4pm Monday to Thursday and 9.30am – 2:30 on Friday. Specific courses and workshops are run at the FLU on a Friday afternoon.
Learners often discuss an individual learning need at application stage or at interview stage. There is another opportunity at enrolment to let us know if you think you may need the help of the Learning Coach Team. We have a duty under the Disability Discrimination Act to provide reasonable adjustments to help you succeed and letting us know as soon as possible will help in this process. If you have already started your course and feel that you need help, then please speak to your Course Tutor. You will be able to discuss what you need and jointly make a decision to contact the Learning Coach Team. Your tutor will complete a LC1 referral form, which will be passed to the Flexible Learning Unit (see example at the back of the leaflet). An appointment will then be arranged with the Leaning Coach Team to properly assess your need and arrange regular coaching.
You need to be aware that when you have jointly agreed the need for support with the Team and you have been allocated a Learning Coach and regular coaching sessions they then become a part of your official college timetable. If you cannot attend or you no longer need coaching time, you must inform the Learning Support Co-ordinator or the Equality Manager immediately. Non-attendance without a reason may affect the payment of your grants e.g. Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) or Assembly Learning Grant (ALG). The Learning Coach Team can assist any Learner attending a mainstream Further Education course. If you are studying for a Higher Education qualification there is a different method of funding. Please speak to Student Services who will arrange for you to speak to your Local Education Authority (L.E.A)
