College Merthyr Tydfil and Merthyr Schools Rugby announce new partnership

The College Merthyr Tydfil has, today, launched a formal partnership with Merthyr Schools Rugby, which aims to support the current schools programme and support pathways and transition into college.   

The partnership, which is the first of its kind in Merthyr Tydfil, will provide an opportunity for current Merthyr Schools Rugby players to receive targeted strength and conditioning during pre-season, have access to bespoke education and rugby information events, VEO resources and holiday and enrichment camps.

Merthyr Schools Rugby have achieved great success in the Dewer Shield competition and their EPP Programme is thriving with mass participation. Working together, we believe that the college and Merthyr Schools Rugby can take these successes even further, supporting each other to achieve their KPIs, Vision, Mission and objectives.

Simon Evans, Assistant Principal at The College Merthyr Tydfil, said: “We’re so pleased to be working in partnership with Merthyr Schools Rugby. The knowledge and experience that David Brown and the rest of the Merthyr schools coaching team will bring to this partnership, together with the pathways and academy programme on offer at the college will not only help retain good Rugby players in Merthyr but also ensure that these rugby players are able to pursue whatever educational pathway they choose e.g., A levels, alongside continuing to play high performance rugby.”

David Brown, Merthyr Schools Rugby Coach, stated “I’m really excited about being part of this new partnership. I get really frustrated when I see excellent rugby players leaving Merthyr. Through this partnership, we now have a structure in place that will enable them to study any further education course they wish alongside developing as a performance player.”
