Partnership link with General Dynamics
The college has recently teamed up with Merthyr Tydfil’s newest major employer to ensure mutual benefits for the wider economy and workforce.
General Dynamics Land Systems-UK, which is set to create 250 jobs over the next 12 months, is working with the college to train the workforce at its Pentrebach base.
In 2016, the college and General Dynamics agreed a new engineering apprenticeship programme, providing the opportunity for BTEC level 3 engineering students to combine working at the plant with studying at the college. The first cohort of these learners have now completed their first year and are all enjoying the opportunity to gain hands on experience whilst completing their BTEC level 3 engineering courses.
Rhys Davies, a former pupil of Afon Taf High School commented “The apprenticeship has provided a fantastic opportunity for me to study and work locally.”
Niall Rowlands, who also previously studied at Afon Taf High School, stated “I’m really pleased to have been given the opportunity to study on an apprenticeship programme with such a large and reputable company. I’m looking forward to my second year, which will see us work at the plant for four days a week and spend one day a week at college.”
In addition, the college has also been delivering Spanish lessons to General Dynamics staff who are based between the Merthyr plant and the company plant in Seville. For further information on General Dynamics http://www.generaldynamics.uk.com
