A group of 17 further education students and their parents had the opportunity to attend the launch of the UHOVI sponsored Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), Heads of the Valleys Young Leaders programme on Wednesday 22nd October. The students, all studying AS and level 3 BTEC qualifications at The College Merthyr Tydfil, will participate in the programme throughout the course of the academic year.
The Young Leaders programme, which is supported by Admiral Insurance and John Lewis, provides an opportunity for students to gain one of the ILM’s industry-recognised qualifications, helping them to enhance their leadership and employability skills.
Speaking at the launch, college student Alex Jones who participated in the programme last year commented “The programme is a fantastic way for students like myself to gain an experience of working with employers and industry at the same time as studying for a further education qualification. The programme is unique and helped make my personal statement stand out from other applicants when applying to university. I think it almost certainly contributed to me securing my place to study a Business degree at Cardiff University”
The course, which is delivered by ACORN Training and Recruitment at the college over a period of 12 weeks, also provides an opportunity for students to spend two days on work placement at either John Lewis or Admiral, enabling them to enhance their employability and leadership skills.
Francis Cowe, Director of Strategic Alliance and UK Partnerships at the University of South Wales, commented “the programme was really successful last year and Alex’s success showcases the skills and talents of students from Merthyr Tydfil, putting the town on the radar of big employers as a place to recruit quality staff from. I look forward to seeing this cohort of students achieve their award”
The ILM is the UK’s leading body for management and leadership qualifications.
