BTEC Extended Diploma Performing Arts students from The College Merthyr Tydfil performed ‘Titus Andronicus’ in the Beaufort Theatre, Ebbw Vale, Thursday 5th November. The performance, which was part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival, focused on a modern version of the Shakespeare play, featuring the story of the general Titus Andronicus, who returns to Rome from a war against the Goths, bringing with him the queen Tamora and her three sons as prisoners of war.
Directed by Kayleigh Adlam and Jo Richards, the production incorporated original text, a range of practitioners and physical theatre sequences.
Chris Ford, Head of Creative Industries at the college, commented "The production of ‘Titus Andronicus’ was a controversial one due to its violent content and no other school within the Shakespeare Festival chose to attempt it. The students rehearsed really hard for several weeks and it was great to see this hard work pay off, with such an elegant and powerful performance of a dark and controversial story."
The students are now planning to put on a second performance at the college's Creative Industries facility 'Redhouse'.
