BTEC level 3 Sports students at The College Merthyr Tydfil have worked in partnership with Welsh Athletics and Merthyr Tydfil Sports Development to organise an annual primary school Cross Country event throughout the whole of the Borough. The Cross Country heat, which took place on Thursday 20th November saw over 60 year 5 and 6 pupils, from primary schools across Merthyr Tydfil, compete against each other in a series of races, including year 5 girls, year 5 boys, year 6 girls and year 6 boys.
Competing in the competition was 10 year old Lloyd Jones. Lloyd, a year 6 pupil at Ysgol Santes Tudful, commented “I really enjoyed the competition. I participate in cross country running every weekend and it was great to be able to represent my school in this race”.
Student Adam Jones said “I really enjoyed working with Welsh Athletics and the Sports Development Team to organise this event. The skills I have gained from this experience will contribute towards my ‘Working with others level 3 qualification”.
To qualify as a winning team, each school had to try and ensure that four of their pupils finished first in each race. Pupils from Ysgol Santes Tudful performed exceptionally well wining three of the races, including Yr 5 Boys, Yr 6 Boys and Yr6 Girls. The Yr 5 Girls race was won by St Mary’s Primary School.
The winning teams will now go through to a South Central final to be held in Cardiff on Wednesday 3rd December.
Sarah Kerrigan, Head of Sport at The College Merthyr Tydfil commented “I am really proud of all of the students. They worked really hard to make the event a success and they impressed the staff that they worked with from Welsh Athletics and Merthyr Sport Development. In addition to events like this, many of the students also volunteer at sports clubs and local community training sessions on a weekly basis, including working with Merthyr Tydfil Football Club to offer girl’s football sessions for 7-11year olds”
