Photographic success for former college student

Emma Powell, a former Foundation Degree Photography student from The College Merthyr Tydfil has successfully gained a BA in Photography with First Class Honours as well as winning Student of the Year Award at Coleg Sir Gar. Emma began her journey as a photographer in Pen Y Dre High school, where she incorporated photography into her ‘A’ level Art work. She then progressed onto the Foundation Diploma at the college where she concentrated on improving her skills and professional practice in studio photography, darkroom work and notably a prolific portfolio of landscape based images. Her success on the Foundation Degree led to her gaining a place on the BA Photography Degree at Coleg Sir Gar, Carmarthen. Following completion of her degree, Emma has also been offered a residency at Coleg Sir Gar one day a week for the coming academic year.

Emma, who would like to teach photography, is now coming back to The College Merthyr Tydfil to study on the Post Graduate Certificate in Education. Emma said “I am really looking forward to sharing my skills and experience as a photographer with young up and coming student photographers and having the opportunity to work with my past lecturers again.”

Emma is currently showing her photographic work at the Orbit Business Centre, Merthyr, in a joint Exhibition with the Foundation degree Photography students from ‘The College Merthyr Tydfil’ entitled ‘Merthyr In Sight’. The exhibition which seeks to promote Merthyr in a positive way and includes images of landmarks and creative people of the town, will be open all through the summer with a private viewing on Friday 17th July, 11.00am – 1.00pm.
