Megan Harrison, an Outdoor Sport Year 2 student at The College Merthyr Tydfil, has had her commitment to scouting recognised by being awarded the ‘Queen’s Scout Award’.
The award, which is the highest youth award achievable, involves a number of different challenges from several areas such as community involvement and volunteering, adventurous activities, personal growth and leadership development.
Megan was presented with the award at a ceremony held in Windsor on Sunday 26th April.
To achieve the award, Megan had to complete a number of Queen’s Scout Award Challenges, including a gruelling four day expedition in Rhodes, Greece and participating in an all Wales Scout residential camp during June 2014.
Megan commented “I’ve found it challenging but enjoyable. The skills I have gained through Scouts have helped me in college and even helped me to get in to the university of my choice. Now I can't wait for my next scouting adventure.”
In addition to participating in her local scout group, Megan regularly volunteers her time to various organizations in and around her hometown of Merthyr Tydfil through her Duke of Edinburgh’s group and Merthyr Sports Development. During 2013-2014 she achieved the highest award with Millennium Volunteers by volunteering over 200 hours of her own time to others. Megan has nearly achieved her Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Megan also regularly plays football and netball for the college teams in the British Colleges Sport leagues.
Head of Sport, Sarah Kerrigan commented “The Queen’s Scout Award’ is a tremendous achievement for Megan. Not only has she excelled at her studies but she always gives 100% to extra curricula and volunteering activities both within and outside of the college. In 2014 she was awarded the Welsh Colleges Sport Female Volunteer of the Year in honour of her commitment to sports volunteering. I am so glad that her fantastic achievements in scouting have been recognized.”
