Why choose Welsh?

By choosing to study Welsh second language at A level you will be able broaden the career opportunities available to you. Fluent Welsh speakers are in high demand in many careers across Wales. The ability to speak Welsh will also open up a whole new world of Welsh culture to you! Whether you are interested in the theatre, art, traditional or contemporary music, you will find that there is a vibrant community waiting for you!

Course description

As units of study (the first year)

Uned 1 / Unit 1

Oral examination (15%)

You will study the film Patagonia, starring Matthew Rhys, Nia Roberts and Duffy. You will be assessed in groups of 2 or 3 students on your response to the film. You will be also be assessed individually on the contents of your written portfolio.

Uned 2 / Unit 2 (10%)

Written portfolio / coursework

You will produce a package of three written pieces of your choice with a Welsh theme. You may choose from one of the following -

 a specific area of Wales

 a social issue

 a cultural issue

 a vocational issue

 an historical subject

 a political issue

Uned 3 / Unit 3 (15%)

Written examination

This will consist of questions to test your language skills together with questions on one of the 5 modern poems that you will study.

A2 units of study (the second year)

Uned 4 / Unit 4 (25%)

Oral examination

You will study the contemporary play ‘Crash’ by Sera Moore Williams. You will again be assessed in groups of 2 or 3 students on your response to the play and your knowledge of Welsh language and culture. You will also be assessed individually on your response to other media you have studied.  (Synoptic assessment)

Uned 5 / Unit 5 (15%)

Written examination

This will focus on assessing your reading and writing skills, giving you an opportunity to respond to contemporary issues.

Uned 6/ Unit 6 (20%)

You will be assessed on the 4 short stories you will study as well as completing further language exercises.

Entry

5 GCSE’s A* – C including English language and a B grade in Welsh second language.

Wrth ddewis astudio Cymraeg Ail iaith lefel A, byddwch yn gallu ehangu’r cyfleoedd sy gyda chi ym myd gwaith. Mae cyflogwyr ar draws Cymru angen siaradwyr Cymraeg. Mae’r gallu i siarad Cymraeg yn agor byd newydd o ddiwylliant Gymraeg i chi hefyd. P'un a oes gennych ddiddordeb yn y theatr, celf, cerddoriaeth draddodiadol neu gyfoes, fe welwch fod cymuned fywiog yn aros amdanoch!

Arholiad llafar (15%)

Byddwch yn astudio’r ffilm Patagonia, sy’n serennu Matthew Rhys, Nia Roberts and Duffy. Byddwch chi’n cael eich asesu mewn grwpiau o ddau neu dri myfyriwr wrth i chi drafod eich ymateb i’r ffilm. Byddwch chi hefyd yn cael eich asesu yn unigol ar gynnwys eich pecyn ysgrifenedig.

 Uned 2 (10%)

Pecyn ysgrifenedig / Gwaith cwrs

Gofynnir i chi greu pecyn ar un o’r pynciau canlynol.

Uned 3 (15%)

Arholiad ysgrifenedig

Bydd yr arholiad hwn yn cynnwys cwestiynau i brofi eich sgiliau ieithyddol yn ogystal â chwestiynau ar un o’r pump cerdd fodern byddwch chi wedi astudio.

Unedau A2 (Blwyddyn 2)

Uned 4  (25%)

Arholiad llafar

Byddwch yn astudio’r ddrama gyfoes ‘Crash’ gan Sera Moore Williams. Byddwch chi’n cael eich asesu eto mewn grwpiau o ddau neu dri myfyriwr wrth i chi drafod eich ymateb i’r ddrama a’ch gwybodaeth am yr iaith Gymraeg a diwylliant. Byddwch chi hefyd yn cael eich asesu yn unigol ar y llenyddiaeth  byddwch chi wedi astudio. (Asesiad synoptig)

Uned 5 (15%)

Arholiad ysgrifenedig

Bydd yr arholiad hwn yn ffocysu ar eich sgiliau darllen ac ysgrifennu gan roi cyfle i chi ymateb i faterion cyfoes.

Uned 6/ Unit 6 (20%)

Arholiad ysgrifenedig

Byddwch chi’n cael eich asesu ar bedair stori fer yn ogystal â chyflawni rhagor o ymarferion iaith.

Entry

5 TGAU A* – C yn cynnwys Saesneg (Iaith) yn ogystal â gradd B Cymraeg Ail iaith.
