A level students at the new College Merthyr Tydfil have performed exceptionally well in their A2 and AS level examinations, with 92% of A2 learners achieving grades A*-E.
These results showcase the first year of a whole host of successes for the new college which opened its doors in September 2013.
A2 Psychology students achieved a remarkable 100% pass rate with all of the students gaining an A-C grade.
In addition the college achieved a 100% pass rate in AS Philosophy, Applied Science, Photography, Welsh, Drama and Theatre Studies, Film Studies, Government and Politics, Media and Religious Studies.
The college’s AS Health and Social Care, Geography, Applied Business and Art and Design students also achieved excellent results with 96%, 96%, 92% and 91% of students achieving a grade A*E respectively.
Creative Industries students performed strongly across the board with 82% of Photography students, 83% of Media Studies students and 75% of Film Studies students achieving a grade A*-C.
Amongst some of the college’s high achievers were students Keely Stafford and Katie Carr-Ferguson. Keely achieved A Grades in English Language and Literature, History and Religious Studies and a Grade B in Drama and Theatre Studies. She will now progress to her second year of study to complete her A2 levels. Katie achieved a Grade A in Biology, Mathematics and Physics and will now also progress on to her A2 studies. Congratulations also to Sophie Griffiths for achieving Grade As in Psychology, English Language and Literature and Geography.

To cap off a year of hard work that has included amongst other things, winning a Poetry Award, being part of the college’s winning team in the Global Enterprise Challenge 2014 and gaining a place on the Oxford University Summer School, 17 year old student Ethan Evans (pictured below) has another success to celebrate; his fantastic AS level results. Ethan, who hopes to go on to study English at Oxford University achieved 2 A’s in Psychology and English Language and Literature and a B in History.
Ethan said “I am really happy with my results. I have got what I need to continue on to my A2 studies and hopefully pursue my ambition to go on to study English at Oxford University. I’d like to say a massive thank you to my tutor Caroline Darch”.

Lisa Thomas, Head of Advanced Level Programmes said: “This has been a successful and encouraging year for A Levels at The College Merthyr Tydfil. We have seen a high percentage of grade A*-C passes, demonstrating the high quality teaching and student support on offer at the college and providing a solid foundation to take forward our expansion of A2 level programmes from 2014 onwards. I am particularly pleased with the results in the Humanities, Creative Industries, Health and Social Care and Business and Law subject areas.
John O’Shea, Principal at the college added “I am very proud of the students. They have worked hard all year to achieve these excellent results. Their academic achievements together with the wide range of enrichment opportunities and experiences that they have participated in over the last year, showcase the value added that the college is providing to learners across Merthyr Tydfil and the surrounding area”.
