A Level Government and Politics

COURSE DESCRIPTION A level government and politics will encourage students to:

  •  Study a number of issues which are of contemporary and international importance
  •  Give you a good insight into how the UK and USA governments work
  •  You will engage with different kinds of political participation and voters’ motives in party support

AS/A2 Units GP1 25 % 1 hour 30 min written paper 80 marks

This module looks at people, politics and participation:

  •  Participation and voting behaviour
  •  Electoral systems
  •  Pressure groups and protest movements

GP2 25 % 1 hour 30 min written paper 80 marks

This module considers governing modern Wales, particularly:

  •  The british constitution
  •  Parliamentary structures in Wales and the UK
  •  The core executives in Wales and Westminster

A2 GP3a 25 % 80 marks
This module covers the politics of the USA

GP4a 25 % 80 marks
This module engages with the government of the USA

Entry 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C including English language and maths.

Progression Many students apply to and are offered places at university to study courses such as history, politics, journalism, law, philosophy and humanities. Government and politics is popular as a fourth A level for students pursuing courses in medicine related courses
