A Level Chemistry

Qualification AS / A2
Examination Board WJEC
Course Description The course as a whole encourages candidates to understand that chemistry is concerned with the exploitation of the Earth’s resources in the production of energy and new materials by the control and use of chemical reactions. Understanding the behaviour of materials allows chemists to design new materials for specific uses. In these respects, chemistry plays a vital role in providing an enhanced quality of life.
AS/A2 Units The first year is the AS course and covers:
Unit 1: Controlling and using chemical changes
Unit 2: Properties, structure and bonding
Unit 3: AS chemistry practical unit
The second year completes the
a’ level with:
Unit 4: Spectroscopy and organic chemistry
Unit 5: Physical and inorganic chemistry
Unit 6: A2 chemistry practical unit
Assessment 80% examination and 20% coursework
Entry 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C. GCSE science and maths at grade B or above.
Progression This course provides a suitable foundation for the study of chemistry or a related area through a range of higher education courses (e.g. chemistry, medicine, biochemistry, molecular biology, chemical engineering, etc) or direct entry into employment. In addition, the specification provides a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for candidates who do not progress to further study in this subject.
