Healthcare Academy

‘Building Bridges’ – A Local Collaborative Healthcare Academy (Cwm Taf University Health Board and the College Merthyr Tydfil

As part of the new A-level provision in The College, Merthyr Tydfil, the science department has launched a Healthcare Academy in partnership with Cwm Taf Health Board. The academy is open to all college students who are interested in a career in healthcare and can fully commit to the programme.

The main goals of the programme are;

  • To help learners find out more about working in the NHS
     
  • To develop some of the specific knowledge and skills that are required by the NHS
     
  • To provide support for university and job applications

Phase 1 September-April (Yr1): Workshops

Learners are invited to attend monthly workshops based on a wide variety of topics related to working in healthcare. The workshops are lead by professionals from the NHS, allowing learners direct access to expert advice and teaching. There is then a short, self-directed, project that

follows on from each workshop to encourage participants to look at the issues in more detail.

Phase 2 April-August (Yr1): Work experience

The science department and the NHS work together to organise work experience for the members of the Healthcare Academy. This allows students to further develop the knowledge and skills learnt from the workshops, get a first hand idea of what it is like to work in the NHS and complete a work based project that supports their applications. Please note that work experience places cannot be guaranteed for all learners. However, all learners are invited to the University of Wales Healthcare Experience day.

Phase 3 September-October (Yr2): Applications

We support academy members’ university applications in two ways. The first is by reading through their personal statements and suggesting possible improvements. The second is by a series of mock interviews so we are able to give feedback on interview technique and the quality of answers. This support comes
from teaching staff and clinical staff, some of whom are also involved in the admissions process.
