Hairdressing students demonstrate German hair styles and techniques

03/12/2015

Twelve hairdressing students from The College Merthyr Tydfil recently had the opportunity to take part in a two week Erasmus + funded work experience placement in Jena, Germany.

The group of students, currently studying level 2 and level 3 hairdressing at the college, spent the two weeks experiencing the culture, language and work ethic of the East Germans and learning all about hairdressing the German way.

Initially a little nervous about the prospect of holding down a work placement in a foreign country, they all had a fantastic experience.

Level 2 hairdressing student Emma Burton commented “I was placed in a hair salon called Schnidtz Punk in Jena. During the two weeks I had the opportunity to practice coloring, cutting, blow-drying and lots of other general hairdressing skills. It was a fantastic experience. The Germans have totally different hairstyles to the UK, with German people tending to opt for more natural styles so it was great to practice styles that I’m not used to doing. It was also great to pick up new techniques on coloring and sectioning hair.”

Emma was so excited about the new techniques and tips she picked up that she couldn’t wait to demonstrate them to her fellow classmates and showcasing what she had learned about all of the different methods of slicing and foiling hair.

“I was really excited to demonstrate my new skills to the rest of my hairdressing class. I will certainly be trying these skills out over the next few months.”

Emma impressed the Shnidtz Punk Salon owners so much that she will now go back and spend two month’s work experience there during the summer of 2016.

“I’m so happy to have secured a summer work placement back in Germany. I can’t wait to go back out there and showcase how I have developed my skills further. I hope that the summer placement will increase my confidence as a hairdresser and provide me with that extra experience to help me secure a job at the end of my studies.”
