First college in Wales to train staff on Outstanding Teacher Programme (OTP)

The College Merthyr Tydfil has teamed up with OLEVI to become the first college in Wales to have staff trained in its Outstanding Teacher Programme. 30 staff from across all divisional areas have been selected to become the first cohort of college staff to participate in the programme. These staff have been selected based on the quality of their teaching (consistently good), leadership and coaching skills.

It is hoped that the training will support the staff in their leadership of teaching and learning at the college and help them to develop a positive ethos and expectation where the quality of teaching and learning is continually role modelled at an outstanding level.

The training programme is currently being delivered over a ten week period, enabling staff to engage in learning walks and lesson observations as part of the programme and also reflect on their own practice.

Participation in this Outstanding Teacher Programme is just one element in the college’s dedication to providing the highest quality teaching and learning environment.  Our Teaching and Learning Strategy ‘From Good To Great’, is underpinned by a comprehensive staff development programme ensuring staff have:

  • Opportunities to undertake continuous professional development.
  • Access to the latest teaching technologies, innovations and assessment tools.
  • Opportunities to participate in the college’s teaching and learning initiatives.
  • Regular feedback on their teaching delivery.

The success of this strategy is becoming evident from the high success rates, commendations and excellent feedback we have received in each of our teaching areas, including the college being shortlisted for the 2015 Colegau Cymru Teaching Award.

Our Health and Social Care Division has also been named the best division in Wales for the second consecutive year.
