College Work Based Learning department celebrates best ever progression rates


The college Merthyr Tydfil’s Work Based Learning department is celebrating its best progression rates ever with 27 students successfully moving on to further study or employment after completing engagement, traineeships and summer school programmes at the college.

Ceri Willis-Price studied a level 3 apprenticeship at the college, enabling her to combine studies with work experience in a local primary school. Ceri, who was awarded the college’s Apprentice of the Year 2015 award, has now successfully progressed on to study a teaching degree at the University of Wales Trinity St David, Carmarthen.


Ceri, commented “The apprenticeship programme enabled me to gain access to real life work experience whilst gaining childcare skills and qualifications. I really enjoyed my time with the college and Cyfarthfa Park Primary School. The experience helped me to realise that I wanted to work with children in my future career and gave me the incentive to apply to study a teaching degree at Trinity St David’s.  I am so grateful to the college for all of the help and support they provided me with during my apprenticeship. I’m really looking forward to gaining my degree and progressing into full-time teaching.”

Other successful engagement and traineeship students, include Daniel Atkins who has successfully progressed on to an Aircraft Maintenance Apprenticeship programme with British Airways, Liam Nash who has successfully progressed on to a Rail Apprenticeship with ARC Academy and Jack Bradford and Corey Williams who have successfully secured apprenticeships with local company – Raynes Construction.

This year, the college also linked with the Prince’s Trust Cymru to help unemployed young people. As part of this initiative, the Work Based Learning division organised a summer school aimed at engaging with young school leavers and encouraging them to attend college in September. This initiative was extremely popular, resulting in over 10 young people enrolling on a range of college courses from Business and ICT through to Mechanics, Engineering and Construction. Head of Work Based Learning, Karen Rees, commented “The aim of the summer school programme was to provide support and guidance to school leavers who were unsure of their next step. I’m so happy that we succeeded in inspiring these youngsters into continuing their education at the college and I look forward to seeing them progress and achieve their qualifications over the next two years.”
