07/11/2014

Ethan Evans, an A2 level student at The College Merthyr Tydfil, has successfully beat off competition from 500 students around the world to claim the prize for ‘Best in Wales’ in the 16-18 age category of   ‘Prologue to An Adventure’, the Dylan Thomas-inspired international creative writing competition.

Ethan, who has a keen interest in creative writing, submitted a short piece entitled ‘Mrs Dylan Thomas’ depicting the story about Dylan’s relationship with his wife.

He was awarded the prize, by the Education Minister, at a special ceremony held at the Waterfront Museum in Swansea on 6th November.

Ethan commented

I couldn’t believe it when they announced that I had won the Best in Wales for the 16-18 category. I was overwhelmed. I love writing and am very pleased that so much work has been taken to commemorate and celebrate the centenary of Dylan Thomas. The competition has provided me with an opportunity to really study the works of Dylan Thomas. I think it’s important that students like myself get the chance to participate in initiatives like this to celebrate writers and encourage more youngsters to become interested in reading and writing. This will hopefully improve literacy skills across Wales”.

Ethan, who has applied to study English at Oxford University, belongs to The Writer’s group within the college and several writing groups across the local community.
