Students at The College Merthyr Tydfil are celebrating after achieving the highest possible milestone for Millennium Volunteers. The initiative, which records voluntary hours in order to help students achieve certificates of recognition, is open to all college students.
Level 3 BTEC Sports Studies students John Hughes and Aaron Skitt were rewarded for completing 200 hours of volunteering in recognition of the coaching opportunities they have taken up with Merthyr Tydfil Football Club and local boys and girls clubs. This has involved playing a key role in the organisation and running of after school sports clubs, and half term holiday camps.
In total, seven students across the college have now achieved 200 hours, seven have achieved 100 hours and thirteen students have achieved 50 hours.
Jordan and Jess Osbourne were the first college students to achieve the 200 hours milestone. Jess commented “The Millennium Volunteers initiative is a fantastic way to help students like me gain recognition for the volunteering work we undertake. Over the last year I have been fortunate to work with local clubs to run a number of sports sessions. This led to me now being employed by Merthyr Tydfil Football Club on a part-time basis to run a weekly girls football coaching session.”
David Heald, Millennium Volunteers, commented “The College Merthyr Tydfil has been at the forefront at taking forward the Millennium Volunteers initiative. Students have benefited from the support they gain from the college to volunteer and the recognition of it provided by MV. The College has proven very easy to work with and the commitment to supporting and developing their volunteers is obvious and very welcome. The numbers who choose to volunteer and the recognition of them is testament to the quality of support on offer. I regularly use the college as an exemplar of a college that is running an effective volunteering programme with MV recognition.”
