Two groups of College Merthyr Tydfil students are busy getting ready to travel to Germany for two weeks experience. The twelve hairdressing and ten construction students are part of a cohort of over 272 college students who will have the opportunity to take part in an Erasmus + funded work experience placement in Germany over the next two years.
The students, who have had the opportunity to learn German before they go, will spend the two weeks experiencing the culture, language and work ethic of the East Germans. They will also take part in cultural visits, including a visit to Berlin.
The hairdressing students will be placed in variety of hairdressers in partnership with UAG, Jena. Although a little nervous about the prospect of holding down a work placement in a foreign country, they are all looking forward to the experience.
Level 3 hairdressing student Jessica Jones (pictured below), commented “I am a bit apprehensive about working in a different country but I’m looking forward to the experience. I’m going to be placed in a hair salon called Schnidtz Punk and will have the opportunity to practice colouring, cutting, blowdrying and lots of other general hairdressing skills. I’m hoping the placement will help to increase my confidence as a hairdresser and provide me with that extra experience to help me secure a job at the end of my studies.”
A further 22 groups of students will go out to Germany over the next two years. These students will be from a range of vocational areas, including Motor Vehicle, Business, Information Technology, Beauty, Childcare and Travel and Tourism.
