The College Merthyr Tydfil has been named as the 2nd best ‘Sports Leadership Academy out of all further education colleges in the UK. The award seeks to reward and recognise those colleges that go above and beyond the call of duty to deliver Sports Leaders UK’s awards and qualifications whilst having a positive impact on the local community.
The college, which was the only Welsh finalist in the awards, was awarded Sports Leadership status in 2011. Speaking at the awards, Head of Sport, Sarah Kerrigan, commented, “To be named as 2nd in the UK is a real honour and testimony to our commitment to Sports Leadership. Over the last two years, we have initiated and implemented a number of outstanding sports leadership and development activities both within the college and across the local community. Not only do we offer a wide range of sports courses, competitive and team sports and enrichment activities, but we are also renowned for being a driving force in key sporting initiatives, including the Welsh Government’s Physical Literacy Programme, Millennium Volunteers, Disability Sport and much more. Our success and commitment to such programmes has been rewarded by the development of excellent partnerships with local, national and international sporting organisations, all of whom regard the college as an exemplar in the provision of sporting skills and qualifications, enrichment and volunteering opportunities and general level of sporting excellence.”
