COURSE DESCRIPTION This is a qualification fundamentally designed for young students leaving school. The course suits both lower level students, who discover the motor vehicle environment is one that they can flourish in, and for those ‘Young Engineers’ with potential. This is a nationally-recognised, vocationally-related qualification (VRQ) which provides the essential knowledge to do a job. Most VRQs are endorsed as technical certificates – an essential component of the sector skills council’s apprenticeship framework.
The vocational aspect of the level 1 diploma is the technical units which includes:
Light vehicle construction and routine maintenance
Operating principles of light vehicle engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems.
Operating principles and maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems.
A key aspect of the level 1 diploma qualifications is their close relationship to essential skills Wales qualifications.
The student’s knowledge is assessed by set practical assessments in a motor vehicle workshop environment, set assignments and set ‘on-line’ examinations.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: GCSE grades D-F in English, mathematics and a science-based subject
PROGRESSION: Progression to IMI Level 2 Diploma or NVQ2 by either full-time or part-time basis (if in training or employment).
