BTEC Sport and Advanced WBQ


This course provides a thorough grounding in aspects of sports development, coaching and fitness with a strong emphasis on leadership.

The course can be studied as:

  • a subsidiary diploma (1 year) equivalent to 1 A levels
  • 90 credit diploma (1 year) equivalent to 1.5 A levels
  • diploma (2 years) equivalent to 2 A levels
  • extended diploma (2 years) – equivalent to 3 A levels

During your studies you will cover units such as:

  • assessing risk
  • anatomy & physiology
  • sports leadership
  • nutrition
  • fitness testing
  • training & programming
  • sports coaching
  • current issues
  • sports development
  • practical sport (team)
  • instructing physical activity
  • psychology

Included within the course is a wide range of additional qualifications such as active IQ level 2 fitness instructor award, level 2 community sports leader’s award, level 3 higher sports leaders award as well as the advanced Baccalaureate incorporating essential and key skills up to level 3.

Also opportunities to gain coaching qualifications, work voluntarily in the community and join the college sports teams.

On completion students will achieve the equivalent of 1-3 A levels plus 1 A level equivalency for WBQ.

The course provides the knowledge, understanding and skills for students wishing to enter a career in sporting performance, coaching/teaching and training as well as the uniformed services. A pass, merit or distinction gained on this course would enable students to then progress onto higher education at a university or the foundation degree course within the college.


5 GCSEs grades A-C. Entry is by interview; students must have a reasonable sporting ability.
