BA (Hons) Art Practice - New for 2017 entry

We are delighted to announce that Foundation Degree Art Practice course at The College Merthyr has gained BA status as from September 2017. Students who enrol with us will now have the opportunity to study a third year at the college and top-up their foundation degree to a complete BA Hons degree.

The course delivers a broad range of art practice, including painting, printmaking, ceramics, video, installation, digital media and contextual studies. Professional studies also forms an integral part of the course, enabling students to gain work experience in teaching and a wide variety of employment opportunities in the Welsh Arts community and further afield.

Students are timetabled for 14 hours contact time per week over 30 weeks per academic year.

The course provides all students with a base room which is equipped with individual dedicated studio spaces. Students work in the base room on a daily basis. Studio practice modules are either skills based or self-directed. All students receive formal lectures, workshops, demonstrations, tutorials, visits to galleries, and talks by visiting speakers. Lectures and practical workshops take place at the main college site and art history modules are delivered at the Red House. The printmaking studio has equipment for water-based screen-printing, intaglio, relief printing, fabric printing and photo-etching.

Over the last five years the course has developed positive links with employers working with community projects, galleries, public commissions, studio initiatives and artist led companies. Employment opportunities currently have involved students working with Arcade Gallery Cardiff, Neon Design Company, London, Inkspot Gallery Cardiff, Crew Celf and Made Gallery, Cardiff.

All students take part in a field trip to London as part of their studies. The trip, which takes place over 3 days, entails visits to major collections and exhibitions. Students are required to undertake research appropriate to a module brief. A foreign trip is organised each year, which students from both years may attend.
