Avant Garde Spectacular

04/06/2015

Over forty level 3 hairdressing students from The College Merthyr Tydfil took to the catwalk to display their fantastic hairdressing skills as part of the college’s end of year Avant Garde Spectacular!

The event, which required them to showcase a range of cut and colour and Avant Garde hairstyles, marks the end of a very successful year for the students, many of whom will now be progressing onto full-time positions at local salons or further study at the college.

Combining a range of hair styles with themed makeup, costumes and accessories, the students wowed judges with their fantastic designs inspired by famous people, films, movie stars and much more!

Tutor Vicky Williams commented “The students worked extremely hard and took the time to research and come up with a range of individual designs. I am very proud of them all”

The students’ creations were judged by a panel of five judges, three of whom were from the Anthony Charles team in Aberdare. These included Georgina Missen, a former college lecturer, Genai Miles, salon owner and Kelly, a colour technician/stylist.  Both Genai and Kelly were previous students at the college. The fourth judge, Gavin Gould, is a local salon owner and the fifth judge, Vanessa Newel, is a local freelance hairdresser.

In the category of ‘Cut and Colour’ 1st prize was awarded to Abbie Davies, 2nd prize to Demi Price and 3rd prize to Jane James.

Picking up her 2nd prize award, Demi Price, who previously studied at St John The Baptist, commented “I’m really pleased that I won, especially given some of the amazing styles on offer at the competition. I have really enjoyed my time at the college, I have gained communication skills and feel very confident as a level 3 hairdresser. I’d like to thank all of the tutors who have helped and supported me to successfully complete my level 3 qualification. To win 2nd prize is the icing on the cake.”

In the Avant Garde category, 1st prize was awarded to Jane James for her fantastic creation of Mari Antionette.

Stephanie Owens and Samantha Williams earned 2nd and 3rd respectively for their talented creations of ‘The Butterfly’ and ‘Malificent’

Student Jane James said “The experience of taking part in the show was absolutely amazing. I can’t believe that I won both the Avant Garde and came third in the Cut and Colour. I’m really grateful to the tutors for all of the support they’ve provided me over the last year to help me to achieve my level 3 hairdressing qualification and go on to set up my own salon.”

Amanda Wilde, Head of Hair and Beauty at the college, commented “I was really impressed with the fantastic skills and creations that the students have displayed in the show. The standard was outstanding. I wish the students every success with their future employment or studies.”
