Course Description
A level business studies will enable candidates to focus on the dynamic nature of the contemporary business world. The course will:
- Provide opportunities for research into topical business issues.
- Offer opportunities for the development and application of a full range of academic skills.
- Explore real business situations.
- Be practical in the application of business concepts
- Understand the role of the entrepreneur and business in society.
AS/A2 Units
The first year of the AS course covers topics such as:
Unit 1: Planning and financing a business
Unit 2: Managing a business.
The second year completes the A’ level with topics such as:
Unit 3: Strategies for success
Unit 4: The business environment and change.
Assessment
Unit 1: 40% of AS, 20% of A level 1 hour 15 minutes examination 60 marks. Short answer questions and extended responses based on a mini case study.
Unit 2: 60% of AS, 30% of A level
1 hour 30 minutes examination
80 marks. Compulsory, multi-part data response questions.
Unit 3: 25% of A level 1 hour 45 minutes examination 80 marks. Questions requiring extended answers based on an unseen case study drawing upon knowledge from AS units.
Unit 4: 25% of A level 1 hour 45 minutes examination 80 marks. Pre-release research tasks leading to the first section of a two section examination.
Entry
5 GCSEs at grades A* to C including English language and maths or equivalent.
Progression
Successful completion of the business studies A level will see students progress to a wide variety of destinations including higher education, particularly business related courses or those combined with subjects such as IT or language. Alternatively there are opportunities in employment.
