The College boasts high quality and well maintained student computer facilities, currently totalling 470 student accessible computers across three sites. These comprise of both general IT labs as well as labs dedicated to areas with specific learning needs and disciplines. The organisation’s current four year replacement cycle ensures that no IT lab is more than four years old ensuring the equipment is fit for purpose allowing the latest business and industrial software to be offered.
All students are provided with personal computer user and email accounts as well as personal network storage. All computers provide internet access.
This year, £320,000 has been spent on IT related projects. Many of which have direct impact on the student, such as, new and replacement IT labs as well as the installation of a large number of digital audio visual bundles. A significant amount of money has been invested in maintaining a reliable network infrastructure.
In addition to a large Windows PC provision the college has recently increased its Apple Macintosh student provision, now providing two labs catering for the creative disciplines of Media and Art using applications such as Final Cut Pro plus various Adobe and Macromedia products.
We also have a specially catered for additional needs technology suite (ANTS) on the ground floor. This provision is specifically targeted for learners with additional needs. This IT facility houses state of the art equipment such as “goose necks, jelly beans and other touch pads.”
In readiness for September 09 a wireless network is being installed within the learning zone, and the current compliment of laptops is replaced, to further increase both the quantity and quality of open access computer resources.
Also now the College has merged with the University of Glamorgan, work is planned to ‘integrate’ the networks of the College and the University. This will enable College students to access computer resources from the University’s location(s).
IT Support, currently located on the third floor (room 306), is available during term time Monday through to Wednesday 8.30am to 7pm.
