About the Course


Basic – The Word Processing (Basic) qualification is an optional unit within the OCR Level 1 Certificate in Text Processing. The OCR Level 1 Certificate in Text Processing has been designed to develop and recognise candidates’ ability to produce a variety of straightforward business documents.

Intermediate – The Word Processing (Intermediate) qualification is an Optional Unit within the OCR Level 2 Certificate in Text Processing. The OCR Level 2 Certificate in Text Processing has been designed for those candidates who have sufficient skill and underpinning knowledge to produce a variety of business documents without supervision.

Advanced – The Word Processing (Advanced) qualification is an Optional Unit within the OCR Level 3 Certificate in Text Processing. The OCR Level 3 Certificate in Text Processing has been designed to assess candidates’ ability to apply advanced processing and production skills to produce a variety of complex business documents.

What you will Study

Basic – The Word Processing (Basic) unit requires candidates to produce three business documents (one notice for display, one article and one three-column table with single-line column headings) using a word processor, to a standard that meets the business document production requirements of employment. Candidates will work from a draft containing handwritten/typewritten material and recalled text.
Assessment takes the form of an OCR-set and marked examination. The examination period is 1 hour 30 minutes, in which time candidates are required to carry out all assessment tasks within the stated error tolerance. Results will be graded Distinction, Pass or Fail and the grade achieved will be stated on the candidate’s certificate.

Intermediate – The Word Processing (Intermediate) Unit requires candidates to produce four business documents using a word processor, to a standard that meets the business document production requirements of employment. The documents for production are a notice for display, an article/report, a table with columns, subdivisions and multi-line headings and a standard document (letter or memo) which includes stored phrases selected from a phrase file. Candidates will work from a draft containing handwritten/typewritten material and recalled text.
Assessment takes the form of an OCR-set and marked examination. The examination period is 1 hour 45 minutes, in which time candidates are required to carry out all assessment tasks within the stated error tolerance. Results will be graded Distinction, Pass or Fail and the grade achieved will be stated on the candidate’s certificate.

Advanced – The Word Processing (Advanced) Unit requires candidates to produce four business documents using a word processor, to a standard that meets the business document production requirements of employment at senior level. The documents for production are: a multi-page report/article; a ruled A4 landscape table; a two-column article (newspaper style) and a letter or memo. Candidates will work from a draft containing both handwritten/typewritten material and recalled text.

Assessment takes the form of an OCR-set and marked examination. The examination period is 1 hour 45 minutes, in which time candidates are required to carry out all assessment tasks within the stated error tolerance. Results will be graded Distinction, Pass or Fail and the grade achieved will be stated on the candidate’s certificate.

On Completion/Career Paths


Basic – In order to achieve the full Certificate qualification at Level 1, candidates are required to achieve the Core Unit (Text Production (Basic)) plus one of the optional units. A candidate who achieves the Core Unit plus three optional Units, will be awarded an OCR Level 1 Diploma in Text Processing. Certification is available for single Units.

Intermediate – In order to achieve the full Certificate qualification at Level 2, candidates are required to achieve the Core Unit (Text Production (Intermediate)) plus one of the optional units. A candidate who achieves the Core Unit plus three optional Units within a two-year period, will be awarded an OCR Level 2 Diploma in Text Processing. Certification is available for single Units.

Advanced – In order to achieve the full Certificate qualification at Level 3, candidates are required to achieve the Core Unit (Text Production (Advanced)) plus one of the optional units. A candidate who achieves the Core Unit plus three optional Units within a two-year period, will be awarded an OCR Level 3 Diploma in Text Processing. Certification is available for single Units.
